The project involved the modernisation of Ardbeg Distillery on the island of Islay, upgrading part of the estate while preserving its historic character. Works included stripping the existing roof and installing a new Welsh slate covering with cast iron gutters and downpipes, forming two traditional stone dormers, and adding a glass-box window on the south elevation.
The roof build-up integrated smoke-vent louvre windows to meet life-safety standards without affecting the building’s heritage. Delivery required precise logistics, with materials scheduled around limited ferry capacity and weather conditions. Temporary works were planned for tight zones on a live distillery estate.
Local stonemasons, scaffolders, and haulage contractors were engaged to support delivery, maintaining value on the Island and ensuring a durable, future-ready workspace that aligns with modern standards.
